Exploring Accessibility in Research

On October 9, 2025, the UW IHDD hosted a Lunch and Learn focused on building accessibility into research. Researchers, clinicians, trainees, self-advocates, and community partners gathered to explore strategies for creating more accessible and inclusive research practices.

2025 IHDD Lunch and LearnJuliana Garcia, PhD, and Charlie Gregor, MPH, presented an overview of Washington State’s Diversity in Clinical Trials Initiative. Mark Harniss, PhD, followed with a presentation on the importance of accessibility in research and practical approaches for incorporating accessibility into study design and implementation. David Katz, PhD, MPH, and Jakar Delacruz then shared Creating Accessible Research Environments (C.A.R.E.), an accessibility toolkit designed to improve participation in HIV research studies.

The event concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Julia Tang Mattson, MD, PhD, and Mark Harniss, PhD. Panelists Annette Estes, PhD, Ben Moore, Carrie Heike, MD, MS, Jakar Delacruz, John Wennberg, and Megha Santhosh, MS, discussed the challenges and opportunities of implementing accessible research practices and increasing participation in research.

Attendees also learned about the Research Engagement and Advocacy for Diverse Individuals (READI) curriculum, which supports meaningful participation in research by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
