Inclusive Summer Camps: Expanding Opportunities for All Children

APEX Summer Camp staff and camper.A recent KUOW story highlights the challenges many families face in finding summer camps that welcome and support children with disabilities. Adjua Dupree, a Haring Center board member, shared her family’s experience and the barriers that limit access to inclusive opportunities.

Seattle Children’s PlayGarden was featured as an example of what’s possible when programs are intentionally designed to include all children. With accessible play equipment, flexible programming, and staff trained in inclusive practices, PlayGarden shows how camps can create spaces where every child has the chance to participate, build friendships, and thrive.

The story also makes clear how limited these opportunities remain. Many families encounter long waiting lists or find that only a handful of programs are able to accommodate their children’s needs. As Dupree notes, families of children with disabilities want the same opportunities as all families: a chance for their kids to explore, create, and grow during the summer months.
