UW Sleep Study Seeks Families of Autistic Children

Researchers in the University of Washington College of Education are recruiting families of autistic children ages 3 to 8 for a study exploring a collaborative parent coaching model designed to support children who experience sleep challenges.

Young child asleep holding a teddy bear. The study, “Early Birds: A Study on Collaborative Parent Coaching for Families with Autistic Children and Sleep Problems,” will examine the effects, acceptability, and feasibility of individualized sleep interventions developed with the support of a behavior analyst experienced in sleep and autism. Participating families will complete a remote in-home sleep assessment, work one-on-one with a provider to develop an individualized sleep plan, and receive four weekly coaching sessions.

Families may be eligible to participate if they:

  • Have a child ages 3 to 8 with an autism diagnosis and sleep challenges
  • Speak English and can complete written assessments
  • Have access to a device with reliable internet for videoconferencing

The study is led by Robin Finlayson, M.Ed., BCBA, LBA, a doctoral candidate in special education at the University of Washington College of Education.
