Helping Families Navigate Children’s Behavioral Challenges

Julia Mattson, MD, PhDJulia Mattson, MD, PhD, a developmental-behavioral pediatrician and faculty member at the University of Washington Institute on Human Development and Disability (IHDD), recently presented “Helping the Helpers: Empowering Parents to Navigate Behavior” for Seattle Children’s Provider Grand Rounds. Mattson is also an attending physician at Seattle Children’s and an assistant professor of pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine.

The presentation explores the important role caregivers play in behavioral interventions and why even sound recommendations can be difficult to put into practice. Mattson discusses caregiver characteristics, family circumstances, and psychosocial factors that can affect whether a family is able to consistently use recommended strategies.

She also demonstrates how providers can apply behavioral parenting principles when working with families on common behavioral and daily living challenges. Examples involving treatment adherence and toothbrushing refusal illustrate how recommendations can be adapted into practical, manageable strategies for everyday life.

The presentation may be especially useful for health care providers, educators, therapists and other professionals seeking to provide family-centered behavioral support.
