Obama Oral History Interview With Devon Adelman

The Obama Presidency Oral History Project has published an interview with Devon Adelman, a Seattle-based self-advocate.

Devon and Sue AdelmanIn the conversation, Devon reflects on being invited to the White House in 2015 for First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher “Beating the Odds” summit, which recognized students pursuing postsecondary education.

Devon also shares how she learned to advocate for inclusive education after moving from Michigan to Seattle, including a moment when she pushed back against being placed in a segregated setting and sought a school where she belonged. She describes building confidence through cheerleading, theater, and public speaking, including her senior project focused on advocacy.

The interview highlights Devon’s path through high school and postsecondary programs, her experience navigating public transit to attend Highline College, and her continued leadership in disability advocacy and community life.
