Early Autism Diagnosis and Intervention

Dr. Annette Estes, Director of the UW Autism Center, explained that autism can often be recognized by age two. Many families still face long wait times for evaluations and limited insurance reimbursement, which creates barriers to timely care.

Early supports, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, parent coaching, and play-based ABA approaches can strengthen communication and learning for young autistic children. Experiences with therapies vary across families, and access to individualized approaches remains essential.
