COVID During Pregnancy and Association with Autism Risk
A new study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology found that children born to individuals who had COVID-19 during pregnancy were more likely to receive a neurodevelopmental diagnosis by age 3, compared with those whose parents did not have COVID. The strongest associations appeared in third-trimester infections and among male offspring.
University of Washington School of Medicine’s Dr. Kristina Adams Waldorf, IHDD Research Affiliate and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, noted that many infections during pregnancy, not just COVID, may activate immune responses that affect fetal brain development.
