Sustaining Community Health Workers in Pediatric Primary Care
On July 1, 2025, Washington State launched a new Medicaid benefit for Community Health Workers (CHWs) in pediatric primary care. This marks an important milestone for improving access to family-centered care and building stronger teams within the medical home. For over two years, Pediatrics Northwest has partnered with the Health Care Authority and the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to pilot CHWs in clinical practice. Their work highlights both the opportunities and the challenges in sustaining CHWs as part of pediatric care teams.
At the WA SMART networking session today, pediatrician Mary Ann Woodruff, MD, and Rachel Lettieri, LCSW, Director of Care Transformation at Pediatrics Northwest, will share their learning journey, efforts to preserve CHWs in primary care, and opportunities for collaboration.
