Dr. Sunny Juul Named to The Lancet Commission on the Future of Neonatology

The Commission convened neonatologists, researchers, and public health leaders from around the world to examine why progress in neonatal medicine has stalled. Despite major advances in survival over the past several decades, neonatal mortality remains high globally, and the development of treatments and medical devices specifically designed for newborns continues to lag behind other areas of medicine.

The Commission’s report outlines how barriers like limited funding, regulatory challenges, and a fragmented research ecosystem have slowed innovation in neonatal care. It offers concrete recommendations for advancing neonatal medicine through stronger collaboration across research, clinical care, policy, and industry.

The report highlights the urgent need for:

  • A sustainable research and development pipeline for neonatal medicines and devices
  • Greater investment in neonatal innovation
  • Partnerships between clinicians, researchers, families, policymakers, and industry
  • Global recognition of neonatology as essential to public health

The Commission’s work is published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health and is available open access through August 14.
