Listening, Learning, Including: Shifting the Autism Dialogue
In recognition of Autism Acceptance Month, the UW Combined Fund Drive highlights the shift from awareness to inclusion. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex, lifelong developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior in diverse ways. With an estimated 1 in 36 children in the U.S. diagnosed with Autism, the need for early identification, access to services, and acceptance across the lifespan is more important than ever.
This year’s message emphasizes the importance of including Autistic voices in shaping policy, programs, and public understanding– moving beyond awareness to support meaningful participation and self-determination. Resources featured include the UW Autism Center, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, and community-based organizations working to ensure equity and opportunity for Autistic individuals.
