In a significant step towards fostering inclusivity and addressing workplace challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, the University of Washington (UW) has announced the establishment of the UW Disability Staff and Faculty Association (DSFA). The newly formed group, supported by both faculty and staff, aims to create a supportive environment, addressing concerns raised in the recent campus climate assessment.
Mindy Kornberg, J.D., Vice President for Human Resources, expressed her enthusiasm for serving as the executive sponsor for DSFA, emphasizing the importance of recognizing disability as a vital component of diversity. The university’s recent campus climate assessment revealed feelings of isolation among those identifying as having a disability, prompting proactive steps toward fostering inclusivity.
DSFA’s Inclusive Community
DSFA welcomes individuals who self-identify as disabled, D/deaf, chronically ill, Mad, neurodivergent, or allies to the disability community. The association is dedicated to building a supportive environment that recognizes and honors disability as a vital component of diversity.
To promote awareness and encourage engagement, DSFA joins UW’s well-established employee affinity groups, instrumental in fostering a sense of belonging among various communities:
- Asian & Pacific Islander American Association
- Black Association
- Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Association
- Latinx Association
- Native Association
The Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity collaborates with UW Human Resources to sponsor these employee affinity groups, emphasizing the university’s commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion.
