June 1, 2023 – The University of Washington (UW) Center on Human Development and Disability (CHDD) has recently been designated as the UW Institute on Human Development and Disability (IHDD), with Dr. Sandra Juul appointed as the new Director of the Institute.

The UW IHDD is a research, service and training center dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with or at risk for disabilities and their families. The change from a center designation to institute reflects the broad scope of work done at the institute, ranging from cutting edge research to educating future leaders in developmental disability to advocacy and clinical service, offering comprehensive diagnostic, assessment, and treatment services to individuals with or at risk of developing a developmental disability.

Photo of Dr. Sandra Juul, M.D., Ph.D., Director of IDDRC, IHDDDr. Sandra Juul, MD, PhD, the new director of the UW IHDD, is a highly respected clinician and researcher in the field of neonatology and developmental disabilities. She has been a faculty member at UW for over 25 years and has served as the Division Chief of Neonatology at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington.

Dr. Juul’s research focuses on the long-term outcomes of neonatal intensive care and the development of interventions to improve the neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm infants. She has also been a strong advocate for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of society.

Under Dr. Juul’s leadership, the UW IHDD will continue as one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive interdisciplinary service, research, and training centers focusing on children and adults at risk for or who have established developmental disabilities.

The new website for the UW IHDD provides information about the Institute’s mission, programs, and services. The website also includes resources for individuals with disabilities and their families and information for professionals in developmental disabilities.

Overall, the promotion of the UW CHDD to the UW IHDD and the appointment of Dr. Sandra Juul as the new director represent an important step forward in the field of human development and disability. The UW IHDD will continue to play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of disability and improving the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families.
