On May 19, 2023, the University of Washington (UW) launched a new website to promote digital accessibility and inclusion. This website serves as a central hub for resources, tools, and community-building opportunities related to accessibility at UW. The goal is to create a welcoming environment where all students, including neurodivergent students, can have a meaningful and rewarding experience.
The Office of the ADA Coordinator and the Accessibility Steering Committee played a significant role in developing the website and fostering inclusivity on campus. The website reflects the university’s values by highlighting how people with disabilities contribute to the strength and enrichment of the UW community. Accessibility is not just about providing accommodations; it is about creating an environment where everyone’s diverse identities, experiences, and needs are recognized and supported.
The university is proud of its commitment to accessibility and the progress being made across various departments and units. To commemorate Global Accessibility Awareness Day, the 2023 Digital Accessibility Awards were held to acknowledge teams and departments that have made significant contributions to IT accessibility at UW.
UW emphasizes that being a welcoming and inclusive community requires the active participation of all members. Recognizing and embracing the full spectrum of human diversity, including people with disabilities, is essential for creating an environment of excellence. The university is dedicated to ongoing efforts to ensure both physical and digital accessibility, allowing everyone to learn, serve, discover, and contribute as part of the UW community.
